IRAQ Conflict ; HELMETS - even if you don't support the present activity there, at least support those men and women put into harms way.

OPERATION HELMET provides helmet upgrade kits free of charge to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as to those ordered to deploy in the near future.  Troops and their loved ones should not feel they aren't protected with the standard issue helmet. Our forces are issued head armor (kevlar helmets) that offers the best protection known in the Military from bullets and small frags. That was the main danger in previous combat engagements and is still an important defense now.  However, new elements have entered the picture, that of IED's (roadside bombs) and other explosives which these helmets were not designed to defend against. The blast wave, large frag's carried thereon and the trooper being tumbled along the ground or inside a vehicle is producing brain injury ranging from concussion to death or permanent disability...if the blast is survivable. Studies at Walter Reed Army Hospital show that blunt force head trauma cases outnumber penetrating head injuries significantly in troops with brain damage from OIF/OEF.

Spread the Net - From the Italian mal'aria – "bad air", Malaria is a long-lasting blood disease that is often fatal. In Africa, Malaria is the largest single cause of death among children under the age of five – killing one child every 30 seconds, more than 750,000 per year. Without concerted actions, the death rate is expected to double in the next 20 years.

Transmitted by the female, night-biting Anopheles mosquito, Malaria is caused by the single-celled Plasmodium parasite. Once in the bloodstream, the parasite matures and multiplies and can destroy thousands of red blood cells in a few hours. Children, with their small bodies and immature immune systems, are particularly vulnerable to severe illness and death.

The horrific results – between 350 and 500 million people are infected with Malaria annually, with the vast majority of them in Sub-Saharan Africa, and most of them children. Many children who survive are left with persistent anaemia, lifelong brain damage or paralysis. Malaria in pregnant women can lead to low birth weight, anaemia and a greater risk of neonatal death to their babies. Economic consequences are equally devastating. Malaria has reduced economic growth in African countries that have the highest disease burden by as much as 1.3 per cent per year and is responsible for more than US$14-billion annually in healthcare costs and lost productivity. In Africa, Malaria accounts for 40 per cent of public health expenditures. $50 bucks gets you five nets to save potentially 10 kids.
